03 Jun New doctor: Ignacio Tamarit
Last Thursday, May 30th, Ignacio Tamarit became the 11th person to receive a Ph D degree under my supervision or co-supervision (4 female, 7 male, quite happy about this). His thesis, entitled “Ego-centred models of social networks: The social atom” is a fine piece of work reporting a significant advance on understanding how we organize our relationships and, for the first time to our knowledge, it offers an explanation of the so called “Dunbar’s circles”. The main result is reported here, and it will soon be followed by several papers more, extending the theory to a continuous version with “circles” or “layers”, and reporting on our findings on personal networks of students in two high schools in Madrid. The committee, consisting of Javier M. Buldú, Roberta Sinatra and José Luis Molina, did an excellent job and provided us with very relevant insights and ideas for further exploring, so thank you all very much. And last, but not least, congratulations to Ignacio for an awesome work!
